Professional Activities:  

·        Time Management Activity

Prepare a weekly schedule, make a table and a graph of your use of time, try to follow the schedule for a week and log your actual schedule, write a paragraph describing what you learned from the exercise.  More details are shown in the handout.  Worth 2 PA points.

·        ISG Field Trip

Attend the field trip to the ISG steel mill, Saturday, October 16, from 8:15-11:45 a.m.  Worth 1 PA point.  A second PA point may be earned by writing a short report about the steel mill.  One PA point will be subtracted for anyone who signs up but doesn’t show up.

·        “Invention by Design” Box Activities

Choose two of the box activities found in the chapters of “Invention by Design” and write up several paragraphs about each one.  1 PA point.

·        “Apollo 13”

View the video and write a paragraph describing three technical problems that the astronauts had to solve.  1 PA point.

·        Service

Attend a Habitat for Humanity work day.  1 PA point.

Join Engineers without Borders and participate in their preparations.  1 PA point.

Assist in Future Fest, a 7th grade career fair, October 14, 2004.  2 PA points.

·         “October Sky”

View the video and write a paragraph describing three technical problems that the boys had to solve.  1 PA point.

·        Career Fair

Attend the Career Fair and visit at least three booths.  Fill out the Career Fair form and turn in for 1 PA point.

·        Professional Society

Join a professional society and get 1 PA point.  Limit 1 point.

Become an officer in a professional society.  1 PA point.

·        Study Tapes

Borrow a study-skills video from the Learning Resource and Assessment Center and write a summary of the best tips found in it.  Worth 1 PA point.  Limit 2 points in TM/SS areas.

·        EIS Training

Earn a professional activity point by attending an EIS training session. Fill out a Professional Activity Form, available in class, and turn it in. Maximum 2 points.  Find the classes and times at http://www.valpo.edu/eis/dirindex/traindx.html

·        Meet a Professor/Role Model

Meet with a professor or engineering student who is considered a role model.  Interview them about engineering related topics.  Write up a summary of your discussion.  Worth 1 PA point.

·        Shadowing

Follow an engineer around his/her job for a day. Submit a 1/2-1 page report including the name of the company, the date, the name of the engineer, and some of the interesting things you learned about engineering.  Worth 2 PA points.

·        Ethics

Go to the Applied Ethics Case of the Month Club web site:  http://www.niee.org/pd.cfm?pt=AECM.  Read the Recommended Core Ethical Values found on the web site.  Read through the Current Applied Ethics Case of the Month.  (These are most easily accessed from the Case of the Month Overview.)  Read the alternate approaches.  Considering the ethical values described in the Core Ethics Values section, choose what you think is the best solution for the engineer involved, and vote on line.  Write a paper (<1 page) explaining your choice and how the core ethical values support this choice.  You might tell why you rejected some of the alternatives.  You need not repeat all of the facts of the case.  Worth 1 PA point.
